When the Going Gets Tough: How S&D Paving Helped Save the Day on DIY SOS

S&D Paving Works With DIY SOS To Save The Day

S&D Paving has donated our time and expertise to help transform a family’s home on the latest episode of the BBC One series DIY SOS. This was an incredible experience for the team and allowed us to work with the local community to create a safe haven for a family dealing with grief.

In this episode, we volunteered our time, skills and services to create a better home for five siblings. Our work here is a testament to what we can provide all clients and demonstrates our ability to work under pressure.

In this post, we are sharing not only what we did with the DIY SOS team, but also S&D’s Managing Director stepped in to save the day when things began to go wrong.

DIY SOS Project Overview: Scott Siblings’ New Chapter

S&D Paving participated in a project for the Scott family, which was aired on BBC One last Friday.

The episode is the fourth in the 34th series of DIY SOS, and covers a family of five siblings living in south London. The siblings had recently lost their mum, and were living in a home that was no longer suitable for their needs.

The family is now being led by the elder brother Somer, and sister Samuel, who have taken on the responsibility of managing the household and caring for their siblings. The three-bedroom home they reside in was cramped with the five siblings, and could not accommodate the increasing challenges the family faced.

Not only do the eldest siblings have to care for the younger children and run a safe household for everyone, but they also need to care for the special needs of their youngest sibling. Seth is the youngest in the family and is blind and autistic.

This episode of DIY SOS centred on re-thinking the whole home so it would be a more supportive, safe and comfortable environment for all the children. S&D Paving is extremely proud to be part of this build and has happily contributed to the work.

We volunteered our services to improve the Scott family home and give the children a fresh start.

When Things Didn’t Go to Plan: How S&D’s Andrew McCourt Stepped In

During this complex build, we experienced an issue with timelines and productivity.

In the episode, you can see how this issue came to be, as one of the major groundworks aspects of the job wasn’t aligning with the timeline or with the accessibility design required by the family. This timing delay was putting pressure on the schedule and risking the smooth handover of the refurbished home.

Luckily, S&D Paving’s Andrew McCourt was part of this DIY SOS build and knows how to handle a pressured situation. As managing director of our leading paving company, Andrew knows how to operate even in the most stressful situations and how to achieve the desired results for our clients.

When dealing with this issue, Andrew took a major lead in project coordination. He worked with the build team to reprioritise the groundwork and oversaw the installation of the accessible paving surfaces, to ensure they would be done on time and to the high standards required by the family.

These accessible pathways are a key part of the landscape build, as they will ensure the younger children can move safely around the home, and support the eldest siblings during their care of both their brothers and household management.

Andrew’s quick thinking and calm control not only kept the project on track but also reinforced the commitment we had all made regarding this build.

S&D Paving, the DIY SOS team, and local volunteers had committed to creating a usable outdoor space to meet the family’s needs, and this setback reinforced how valuable this build truly was.

Proud To Support Local Causes And Communities

At S&D Paving, we believe in giving back and supporting our community. Being able to work with DIY SOS again for this project was a privilege and something we are extremely proud of.

Volunteering our services and labour for a project of this scale is an incredibly rewarding experience. By donating our services and lending our landscaping expertise, we helped provide a space for a family in need to have more freedom and safety.

Working with DIY SOS is always a big achievement for our team, and we are proud that we not only offered our services but also our expertise. Through Andrew’s management, we ensured this project ran smoothly and was successful for the family.

Conclusion

S&D Paving is extremely privileged to have worked with DIY SOS on several occasions, including this large build on the latest series. You can see our team in action and watch Andrew handle the issues within this project on Series 34, Episode 4: “Scott Siblings’ New Chapter”. This is now available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

This project is an amazing example of what can be achieved when people work together for a greater cause. S&D Paving worked alongside local trades, volunteers, suppliers and organisations to create a better home for a family that has been through so much.

We hope this refreshed home and outdoor space will make a lasting difference for the Scott siblings.
