Concrete Block Retaining Wall
So on this wall we already have the foundations in place. We already have the concrete block wall in place. So what we’re doing here is we’re topping up a concrete block wall. So it’s an existing block wall. As you can see, we’ve just knocked off the edge on top so we can get the correct levels in and the wall is in pretty good condition.
The rendering has failed in a couple of areas. We will remove that and we will correct that before we do a facing. But as of now, what we do is we set up our cement mixer. We’ve got our building sand and our cement.
We’ll set the cement mixer up and we’ll get a mix on. We’ll put it out onto our brickies mortar boards, and then our bricklayer will come along and he will lay out cement and he will lay his concrete blocks on. So that’s how to top up a concrete block wall.
Here we have Martin, our bricklayer, working on this retaining wall. Obviously you mix up in a cement mixer. You have soft sand and it’s mixed with a three to one cement ratio. So three shovels of sand, one shovel of cement which makes it nice and strong.
You get the muck put out on a muck board and then your block’s are stacked here. Martin gets the blocks and lines them up. As you can see, we’ve got our joint broken here on each course. You just put the level on, make sure you get the spirit level dead level on top.
So as you can see, we’ve finished these concrete block walls and we’ve now faced them. So what we had here was original block work, which was an original step. Rather than knock that waste and materials – it was solid, the structure was good, the foundations was good, we’ve built on top.
As you can see, we’ve extended it up, we’ve extended it out to the garden. The steps were all over the place, so we’ve got the same riser all the way up. The same depth on a step, all the way up.
And then we’ve run this right round to frame it because we’ve got an LED light all the way around here. So now you can see the finished structure.
